Go Small, GROW BIG! Small Groups Campaign

In September, Knox’s Education and Spiritual Formation Committee kicks off a campaign to support a crucial pathway of spiritual formation and connection in our community: small groups. Campaign events include a four-week workshop to equip new and existing small group leaders; a mini-retreat for Knox leaders to reconnect with God and each other, and a fair to connect church members with small groups and ministry teams. Our prayer is that the campaign will expand and energize small groups at Knox after our long pandemic season. Go small, GROW BIG!

The workshop is a short-term small group for small group leaders. Participants will sharpen their facilitation skills through weekly 90-minute meetings over four weeks, using a curriculum based on work by Dr. Richard Peace at Fuller Theological Seminary. The workshop format will be learning-by-doing: participants will take turns leading elements of the meetings. In dialogue with scripture, participants will discuss the purpose of small groups at Knox, and the nature of small group activities, relationships, and meeting dynamics. We plan to focus some of the workshops on effective online small group facilitation since that format will continue to be a vital way for us to connect if the pandemic persists. Meetings are Wednesday evenings in September (9/1, 9/8, 9/15, and 9/22)  from 7 pm to 8:30 pm via Zoom. For more information and to sign-up, please contact Aaron Mead or the church office.

We are delighted to welcome Dr. Charlene Jin Lee as a guest preacher, supporting our ongoing Small Groups Campaign. Charlene is a practical theologian whose work centers on themes of identity, voice, and context in spiritual formation. She teaches spirituality at the University of Redlands Graduate School of Theology (SFTS) and leads the southern California cohort of RISE Together National Mentorship Network of Women of Color in Ministry. Discerning a transition from academia to parish ministry, Charlene served as interim pastoral associate at Brentwood Presbyterian Church and is a columnist for The Presbyterian Outlook. She is a candidate for ordained ministry in the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.). Charlene holds a Ph.D. in religious education from Union Presbyterian Seminary and an Ed.M. from Harvard University.
