Wednesday, June 9th (7 pm) – Bert Newton – Making Housing and Community Happen (MHCH)

Bert Newton is a member of Making Housing and Community Happen (MHCH), an organization that advocates for Affordable Housing, and a Ministry Associate at Pasadena Mennonite Church.  He is the founder of the Palm Sunday Peace Parade that was initially started as a protest of the war in Iraq and ran for 16 years (from 2003 to 2018). He also authored the book Subversive Wisdom: Sociopolitical Dimensions of John’s Gospel.  

This presentation will discuss the biblical theology of land and housing, some MHCH campaigns and successes, organizing through churches, and the biblical theology of organizing/Jesus-as-organizer.

 

Wednesday, June 23rd (7 pm) – Patrick Perry – Housing Justice team member / Real estate lawyer

Patrick A. Perry is a partner at Allen Matkin, where his practice focuses primarily on real estate, land use, as well as natural resources, environmental, and energy law.  Patrick has worked on projects in Pasadena, such as the Art Center, the Del Mar Gold Line Station, and Fuller Seminary.  He is also a member of the Housing Justice Team, the Missions Committee, and the Sustainability Team at Knox since joining us in 2020.

This presentation will discuss the Regional Housing Needs Assessment (RHNA) and the next 8 years – what it means to Pasadena and to the faith community.

 

Wednesday, July 7th (7 pm) – Habitat for Humanity:

Come hear about Habitat for Humanity and its place in combating the housing crisis. We’ll be joined by Frances Hardy, Director of Resource Development, and Julianna Jaynes, AmeriCorps Fellow at San Gabriel Valley Habitat for Humanity. They will talk about the housing ecosystem in Southern California and introduce us to a Habitat homeowner who will share their family’s story. You’ll also hear how Knox is partnering with Pasadena Presbyterian Church on an upcoming Build Day on July 24, including information about the site and what volunteers will be doing that day.

 

Wednesday, July 21st (7 pm) – Dr. Ketmani Kouanchao – Associate Dean, Special Services at Pasadena City College

Dr. Ketmani Kouanchao is the Associate Dean of Special Services at Pasadena City College.  She has a Doctorate of Education in Community College leadership from Cal State University, Fullerton, a Masters in Family Education, and a Bachelor’s degree in Sociology, Public Health, and East Asian Studies from the University of Minnesota. This presentation will discuss topics such as the food and housing insecurity challenges for Pasadena City College students, the remote pantry partnership with Knox, and what the continuing partnership and return to campus will look like.

 

Saturday, July 24 (8 am-3 pm) – Habitat for Humanity workday:

We will be partnering as a community with the Pasadena Presbyterian Church for a workday with Habitat for Humanity.  More details to come.
