UNLEASHING THE POWER OF PRACTICES IN THE CHRISTIAN LIFE

Back in 1993, the Swedish psychologist Anders Ericsson and his colleagues published a paper on the power of practice. Based on research they conducted on violinists over a period of more than ten years, they found that what distinguished the top performers was what they called deliberative practice. Since that time, a host of research has emerged on the power of specific habits in human flourishing. For roughly two thousand years, the Christian church has highlighted the value of practices and habits – specifically spiritual practices. These repeated activities hone in our life with God, and have long distinguished a life of flourishing in faith from one of floundering. But what do such practices look like today? How do we understand God’s activity in them? And how can such habits be nurtured and supported in community?
Join us on Wednesday, January 21stfrom 6:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. for our first Third Wednesday gathering of 2026, where the adults will hear a presentation by Pastor Matt on Unleashing the Power of Practices in the Christian Life. The present and pressing need of our cities, country, and world have left many feeling overwhelmed and burned out.  Spiritual habits allow us to engage with the world in joy as we draw on the strength, wisdom, and compassion of God.  Attendees will not only learn about Christian spiritual practices, but will engage in a classic practice together.
